Look what I found at the State Fair – Mealworm covered caramel apples!

We all know that State fairs around our beautiful country have been known to offer up some weird and wacky culinary delights – and I for one love to share these finds with all of you.  So when I came across this delicacy being offered up at the Arizona State Fair in Phoenix, I knew I had to  show and tell – take a look at mealworm covered caramel apples (warning….not for the squeamish or those light of stomach!)

mealworm caramel apple

Believe me folks, this is not a hoax!  This is an actual ‘treat’ being served at the Chef du Jour booth at the Arizona Exposition and state fair.  I’ve gotta say that I’m not brave enough to try this one, but it may have it’s benefits.  I’ve certainly heard that many insects pack a powerful dose of proteins and other essential nutrients, so this could be a way of getting your vitamins and enjoying dessert as well.  I wonder if this thing is sweet?  Well, if you’d like to give it a try you’re welcome to attend this years festivities, which will be held October 14 – November 6, 2011 in Phoenix.  If you’re feisty enough to try this out please let us know what you think – no doggie bags necessary.  Oh yeah, and if this isn’t exactly your cup of tea, you can always try some deep fried crickets while you’re there – another unique item on the menu!

No time to bring out the grill? Try a cheeseburger in a can!

You may have noticed that I often like to point out some of the quirkier items in food, fashion & business, so I’m sure you won’t be surprised by todays funny find.  Sometimes finding opportunities to get everything done is just not possible in our busy day, so I’d like to help out with those times when you just don’t have a spare moment to cook a good dinner, but you need a little something to get you through the rest of the day.  No need to break out that heavy grill and worry about charcoal and lighter fluid.  Just head over to the pantry and grab a cheeseburger in a can!  Take a look:

canned cheeseburgerNow it just doesn’t get much easier than that does it?  All you need is your trusty can opener, and a pot of boiling water!  This quick fix was created by the German company  Trekking Mahlzeiten for busy hikers on the go.  Who can beat a boil & eat meal?  Sure, the label is in German, so we don’t know what dire warnings we may be missing but hey, if you’re going to eat a boiled cheeseburger in a can you probably don’t care too much anyway right?  At least they told us what it was :) Happy snacking!

With the iconic Barbie doll reaching her 50th birthday you might think you’ve seen it all in terms of fashions, hairstyles and career choices for the curvy blonde bombshell.  We’ve seen Barbie re-invent herself dozens of times, but photographer Weikang Lu has put an interesting new spin on an old classic by styling the beloved Barbie Lady Gaga style, and the results are stunning!  Take a look at a few of his creations:

New twists on an old classic – PB & J gets wild!

There’s not many foods out there more classic than a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.  From kindergarten lunch boxes to dorm room staple and beyond, the PB & J sandwich has been an American mainstay.  But you know someone was going to come along and shake up the status quo, and today I’d like to introduce you to Lee Zalben, a peanut butter lover who has put a unique spin on our old favorite.  Zalben is the founder of Peanut Butter & Co., a NYC sandwich shop.  He also manufactures his own line of specialty peanut butters and has a blog called the Nutroplitan Museum of Art where he introduces a new sandwich every day!  Take a look at some of his creations:

peanut butter sandwichThis sandwich is called the ‘Peanut Buzzer’ and is made from smooth, creamy peanut butter and honeycomb.  Looks like a work of art!  And check out this one:

A sandwich just isn’t a sandwich without…mac & cheese?

I’m a huge sandwich fan.  Burgers, hoagies, panini’s – you name it, I probably love it.  They’re easy portable meals – the ultimate convenience food!  Of course the popular sandwich comes in a gazillion different makes and models, and I try to sample as many varieties as I can.  So when I came across the Mo’Betta Sandwich from Shopsins in New York City, I knew this was one I’d like to try!  I guess you’d call it a breakfast sandwich, but I’ll let you make your own decision on that.  Take a look:

mac and cheese breakfast sandwichWondering what that’s all about?  Well, I’ll tell ya!  This sandwich is a combination of sweet and savory created from 2 buttermilk pancakes with a twist – a little mac and cheese added to the batter to serve as the ‘bun’.  Hiding in between is maple bacon and scrambled eggs.  Yummm, sounds like my type of sandwich.  Whether you order this one for breakfast or lunch, it’s sure to fill you up!  Want to try this monster sandwich out for yourself?  When next you’re in the Big apple, head over to Shopsins and place your order!
